Untitled
Langhihan Market, Butuan City
Langihan Market really offers a lot to the street photographer wanting candid day-to-day photos of people doing their business. In today's post I remembered glimpsing of something green in my periphery while shooting the child entrepreneur photo. I saw her, the girl selling kangkong. I smiled and made a quick gesture asking for a photo and she replied with a shy smile of her own. It was as if life froze for a moment while I took her picture and chaos immediately began soon after.
The funny thing about street photography is that sometimes there are things you don't expect to be in the picture that were apparently there. Or maybe I'm just too mesmerized by her eyes and smile that I didn't see the the tricycle driver in the background. It took me a long time to decide if I wanted the driver cropped or not. I hope I made the right decision.
I had my first digital camera last October 2007. I bought it off ebay for 2,000 pesos-- My Kodak DC 290. It feels like I've come full circle. It's been one year this month since I started photography.
I've used my Kodak to shoot street scenes and I've come back to this place with the same camera. I felt the old me and the present me photographing Langihan that day.

Child Entrepreneur
I love this photo. I was amazed that this kid was already helping out with, I assume, a family business of selling used clothes (Or the more popularly known as 'ukay.') It might not be too long before this kid becomes rich. =) This is my "the glass is half full" take on this. What's yours?
For my trip around Langihan Market I used my Kodak DC 290 2 megapixel camera. It may be very slow but I felt it helps me in choosing when to shoot my photo. You know, think first before pressing the shutter...

Chicken lost in the City
Hiya folks! As I've mentioned on my previous post I lost all my photos from my PC. I'm too busy (read:lazy) to get new Butuan related ones so I decided to post the photos I took with my Nokia 6280 in this new series.
Photo taken along the busy street of Burgos. Cock fighting is still being practiced in Butuan.
Noiseware community is the program I used to remove the noise from the photos. This cellphone model is not really known for its photo taking capability.

After a long tiring day...
This picture makes me ask a lot of questions. About safety-- Is it really safe in Butuan that a person can sleep in a public place without losing anything valuable? Life, limb or wheels of the trisikad, perhaps?
What has the man been doing that he has surrendered to the call of REM without any regard to his physical safety and the public aesthetics? Is he sleeping because of exhaustion or because he's just plain lazy?
What kind of culture allows for this? Is it indicative of a laid-back, happy go lucky people or just a group of people full of riffraff?
I know I'm over-thinking this. I'm just making this post last longer so I can procrastinate more before writing the essays that I have to finish today. ;) Happy weekend everybody!
Photo taken within St. Joseph Cathedral compound (?) Late afternoon. Kodak DC290.

Vegetables are good for you...
...buy some now.
Notice how carefully the vendor arranged her products on the mat.

This photo was taken at Butuan's Langihan Market. Photo captured using my Kodak DC290 2 megapixel camera. I found some photos I haven't used at my other PC so I'm doing old files series this week.

The Thing I hate...
Is the practice of burning dry leaves as a way of maintaining 'cleanliness' and 'neatness' of the surroundings.
Pollution
Inconsideration
Health Hazard
I don't think many people here are aware of the consequences of this very irritating practice.
P.s. My Internet is back, there was a brief interruption of our cable but so far everything is okay. I just pray for those people who are most affected by the situation. The economic situation here in the Philippines is getting worse and add to the mix is this murders and acts of terrorism (how else would one describe them?) what will become of our country now and in the future?

(Wikipedia)
Today is the day Ninoy Aquino died. A Filipino hero who once said that the Filipino people is worth dying for. Makes one think. A lot.

Hard At Work
My photos are dwindling in number again. So I figured that I'd post the leftover of my black and white photography day. Instead of turning color photos into B&W's I changed the settings on my camera so I won't be tempted to let it remain as they are.
.
Peace to all.

Unexpected
I saw these three weed-like plant growing at our backyard one day. It grew from small, unremarkable green weed until the day my father brought a few vegetables for lunch. It was okra. I didn't use to associate green, slimy vegetable with this pretty yellow flower until now.

A Day
In the life of a Maya bird. I haven't been around the city lately. It's work- home-work-home and back again. This is why I'm posting this bird photo. It's a Maya (I think), formerly the Philippine bird. Freedom, which I sorely lack, is symbolized by this bird. Can you see what I mean? Hehe its tiny. It's the best that my 10x camera can do.
On second thought, this bird reminds me of myself.

Capitol Bike Exhibition
I've been to Capitol Park a couple of times and every time I've been there these group of kids are doing acrobatics on their bicycle.

Buco Juice!
The climate here in Butuan ranges from sunny hot to occasional drizzles. This is probably the reason the buco juice (with milk and sugar) seller across Gaisano, corner Pili drive extension has a thriving business. Deliciously cold Buco juice to alleviate the heat.
My friend, who I just realized buys street drinks, attests to the sanitary condition of the juice. Mmm. I'm a bit picky myself. If I have to buy a coconut juice I'd prefer it still in coconut husk and shell. I haven't seen my friend writhing in stomach pain and other gastronomical discomfort so I guess it's safe. People are really buying this stuff. Kudos to the seller!
