<br />
I was telling my cousin that when I was in Abu Dhabi, the river under a bridge (that I forgot the name of) has such an abundant number of fish that people were able to reel big fishes with just their fishing rods. This bridge reminds me of that, and I'm just sad that we don't have that here in Butuan. There is a fishing license needed in order to fish in UAE. That is a good idea in order to restrict fishing indiscriminately. On the other hand, I'm happy enough to see that the water in the Agusan River and the river banks from this area are free from litter.<br />
<br />
Or maybe I'm just overthinking things and the Agusan river is really plentiful fishes and Butuanon riverside fishermen use fishnets (I don't know the exact term been googling) instead of fishing rods (of course, :D) I remember people using other means of getting fish in this area. Duh.<br />
<br />
I'm just not sure how bountiful marine life is, here, though.<br />
<br />
Btw, Shout out to my model, Al, for agreeing to be part of my photo :D<br />
<br />
I don't remember if I already mentioned this here, for those interested, I started a podcast called <span style="color: magenta;">Layrayski Butuanon Podcast.</span> The first series is called Caraga People's Voices and Stories. It's composed of ten episodes- ten people being interviewed. If you want to listen to strangers talk about themselves, their passion, their advocacies, their memories of childhood you might want to listen to the podcast which you can find in this<a href="https://www.layrayski.co/"> link.</a> The series is already complete. I'm currently busy doing the pre-production/production for the second series. Hope you'll come visit the site, like and subscribe also.<br />

I like to walk. When I walk, oftentimes I see so many fascinating scenes. Interesting scenes like a dog sitting still watching the early morning hustle and bustle of Purok 3 Bingkilan, Butuan City.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Going for a long walk means before 8 o'clock I'm already done with my 8,000 steps (at least) goal for the day. Going for a walk with a friend means having an exercise as well as hold conversation every step of the way.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is the second day of walking with my second cousin, Aldhy. I hope there will be more! Sunset colors are lovely, how much more if I can experience sunrise as well? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Walking with someone also means potentially recording a podcast for the second season of my <b>Layrayski Butuanon Podcast </b>which I started late last January. If you want to listen to a collection of interviews I did for people within Caraga (Actually, Butuan and Cantilan) you may want to visit the site at <a href="https://www.layrayski.co/">Layrayski Butuanon Podcast. </a></div>

If you go to Brgy. Bading at the right side there's a sign saying "Balanghai Boat Replica". If you go inside you will be met with huge narra trees, cows freely grazing, and cool breeze gently blowing. This place makes me poetic. And makes me want to take out my picnic basket and blanket, munch on cold fried chicken and macaroni salad. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I there last weekend I wasn't really focused on the boat replica. Maybe next time I wander there I will take a look at it. This time I'm just leaving this photo for you. </div>

This photo was taken one rainy, afternoon at the back of Butuan City Hall. Motorcycles nowadays have increased in numbers (as well as automobiles). There are a lot of reasons for this phenomenon. It could be explained by the growing population of the middle-class family, easy downpayment and monthly payment schemes offered by motorcycle sales companies, traffic and many more. According to <a href="https://www.carmudi.com.ph/journal/philippine-motorcycle-industry-sees-growing-need-motorcycles/">an article</a>, projected sales for motorcycles in the Philippines will reach 2 million units in 2022.<br />

Exploring your own backyard, or in this case, own city is a surprisingly pleasant exercise. We spend so much money going somewhere else when our own City has a lot of beautiful spots. <div style="text-align: justify;">
This is one of my favorite places in Butuan City. It is Salvacion to Don Francisco, I think. Please let me know if I'm right- or wrong. The scenery is so beautiful. Nature is really breathtaking. It's just difficult to capture it in camera. Unless I have a drone or a very tall ladder. Or I am bold enough to climb the hill behind me :D Maybe I'll come back again in the future and attempt to take another photo of this place. I know in the near future this will be a busy road, plying people to and from Butuan. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
P.s.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If I'm not mistaken this is the road going to connect Butuan to Esperanza aside from the Bit-os route and Bayugan route There will be a total of three ways going to Esperanza, Agusan del Sur in the future. That's good to know coz the route from Butuan going to Esperanza via the Bit-os road is quite full of twists and turns, ups and downs. :D</div>

This is a common sight when I went to Esperanza a few days ago. We went back again but this time to Dulag, Butuan City only, using the Butuan City- Malaybalay Road. This form of transportation is the so-called "sky-lab in the Pilipins"- a motorcycle with wings. This place is still a part of Butuan City. It's amazing to see that the major roads going to the surrounding barangay's are paved with concrete already.<br />

In the Philippines, the love affair with basketball continues. If you come and visit this country you will notice how obvious the love the Filipinos have for this sport. In every baranggay, there is a basketball court be it in concrete or in the case above, bare ground. Recently, in my social media circles the basketball is under attack. The question they raise is: why are Filipinos, people who are not naturally tall persist on playing a game that is for the height gifted? I think its a good point. But who wants to deprive these kids the enjoyment they feel for this game? Not me. </div>

<br />
Garbage is a hot topic at the moment. The picture above depicts the Butuan City garbage tricycle (or sometimes for the less endowed barangays- trisikad or pedal powered tricycle). Every barangay probably has a different routine and process but so far, of the two barangay I've seen, they only use this mode of garbage collecting. They assign a garbage man, give them a tricycle/trisikad, paid the minimum (or less?), with no personal protective kits given (as far as I saw), and go around different houses to collect the week's or the days trash.<br />
<br />
It is cheap, admittedly. It will save the barangay some dough. But what about the barangay's garbage man's health? Where is this worker's <a href="http://www.officialgazette.gov.ph/featured/rights-of-employees/" target="_blank">right to safe working conditions</a>?<br />
<br />
In the meantime, we are trying to reduce, recycle and eventually have zero garbage output. Hopefully. Knock on wood.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Dear Butuan City,</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I laud the difference in the past few years. When the national government said "Build Build Build" it happened everyone and not only in the capital region. I felt it. I saw the changes. There are roads and streets and main thoroughfares that are being repaired- and lickety-split too. One day there was a crater in the middle of the road in the lower Doongan area and the next time I passed, there was none. Repairs and rehabilitation in the city's infrastructures are seen by all. We may complain a lot about the traffic caused by these so-called "build build build" but despite it all we know we will eventually benefit the changes done.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, as a Brgy Dagohoy resident. A Pizarro Street resident, I would just like to point out that Pizarro Street sorely needs tender loving care too. Passing through this street is like going on a major rough, off- the- beaten path when it is the opposite. Huge trucks and ten wheelers even make their way through here. So if there is still a little budget in the coffer, maybe there'd be some for repair here? :) </div>

While walking under the Macapagal Bridge, Butuan City- which my friend in the US said is unsafe but proved uneventful to us- thank goodness, we met friendly people who allowed us to take lots of photos without any problem. Anyway, I love this photo of these three brothers playing rubber wheels. They stood still long enough for me to take a few photos. And they were kind enough to let us take more pictures around the area.<br />

In Butuan, we don't have a central park, or an Initao-Libertad, Misamis Oriental protected seascape and landscape. When we think of a park in Butuan, the first thing that comes to mind is Guingona Park, formerly known as Rizal Park, or used to be commonly known as the "Plaza."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But Guingona park isn't what I envisioned a real park should look like. It's mostly an adequately sized concrete park surrounded by a couple of trees. I want greens. Green grass, tall, gnarly old trees, pretty flowers, and maybe a pond. And maybe like a huge fountain like what Rizal Park used to be in the 80's 70's? maybe 60's? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The more accessible nature 'park' in Butuan that I can think of is the Butuan National Museum. If you think old bones and vases are boring and meh, just ignore that middle building and what's inside it, and enjoy the greeneries outside! At 8.30 AM, Butuan National Museum opens its gates to the public (for the museum itself you have to be there at 9AM) and you can bask in nature's beauty and wonder. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are Narra trees, with a poem written in little, laminated paper. Different kinds of shrubs and plants and other things that I don't recognize the name of. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Maybe there could be an event that will showcase the Butuan National Museum, bring it forefront to the minds of Butuan City residents. Butuanons need access to greens and parks. It helps de-stress the citizen from the mostly grays of the urban landscape. If they want to go near a body of water but hate the cesspool the Masao beach has become, they can go visit Butuan National Museum and walk barefoot in the grass. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have to insert it in there- I am advocating for Grounding/Earthing. It was the reason I went to the Butuan National Park yesterday. While waiting for something, I wanted to do my grounding (earthing) therapy while gazing at the Museum's greenish pond. If you have chronic aches and pains and is fed up with artificial analgesics you can try putting your bare skin to the earth's surface be it grass, gravel, soil or sand and just be. It's a bit weird but you'll feel better. It might not be immediately noticeable but you'll feel a general sense of well-being at that time- or the next day. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So friends, if you need a place to have a picnic, there are three possible places that I can think of. For a change, try this place if you haven't visited for a while. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.8px;">Early this morning, three intrepid souls dared to do what is probably peculiar in Masao. These three people decided to do a beach clean up in Masao, Butuan at 5.30 am. There were different motivations for this unusual action. Number one is of course, for the ultimate good of the environment, for exercise, for general cleanliness, for people to not take Masao beach for granted and probably other less lofty reasons. Whatever the motivation was, these three people picked up the non-biodegradable items that they could. There were plastic caps, soft drink bottles, medicine bottles, broken styrofoam pieces, syringe, used diapers (6 pieces) and a sanitary pad. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12.8px;">When Pres. Duterte declared that Boracay should rest for a couple of months, I thought, that's good. It's great that politicians- the people in power are giving importance to the environment even at the expense of angering business owners, potential voters etc. Boracay is admittedly a beautiful place. Even with all the toxic waste being dumped in the waters, it still looked pretty. So it is very understandable that they are taking good care of something we consider precious. A Philippine tourism gem.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12.8px;">On the other hand, ever since I remember, "Beautiful" and "Masao beach" hasn't been exactly been linked together. Black sand beaches aren't given the proper regard that they deserve compared with white beaches. For me, as long as the beach is free from strewn garbage it looks great. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12.8px;">Imagine promoting Masao beach as a beach rich in history. The shores are dark and rich in minerals. It's clean. Safe for children and adults to swim in. Imagine Masao as something Butuanons can be proud of. Not just a place where it's convenient to go to with easy access to vendors that sell good barbecue or grilled seafood. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12.8px;">That's what I imagine. That's what I envision when I picked up pieces of wastes that could be best described as pretty...disgusting things. It gave me the strength not to puke all over the place and soldier on.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12.8px;">Will this picture of Masao ever come true? Maybe. But it will surely need more than one morning of "beach clean up." </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12.8px;">It is a constant refrain- but: every one of us needs to do our part. Let's keep our beaches clean! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 12.8px;">(And for heaven sakes throw your child's diapers in the proper receptacle! Or better yet use a non- disposable kind!)</span></div>

There's so many things I want to articulate when I see this photo I took at Tabo-an last Sunday. But I think I'll just let this photo do the talking. </div>
