Random Photo Friday

I just realized majority of my photos includes people. Since there is a theme tomorrow of which people are main subject I have to post something without the said subject.

Coffee (haus) for the Tribal Leader

After our jog last Saturday at Sports Complex we passed by this "new" cafe, Kapihan sa Datu. Nearby is a shop selling locally made gift items.

Sunset at Butuan City Sports Complex

The sports community in Butuan is active as evidenced by the sweaty and endorphin- filled atmosphere of Butuan City Sports complex last Saturday afternoon. Mostly young athletes (high school and college) were playing different sports like volleyball, softball, football (soccer) and frisbee. Different age groups ranging from elementary-age kids up to middle aged adults, were jogging or walking around the gravel (?) oval track field. There were even a couple of dog owners walking their dogs around the area. The place was bustling!

The sunset from the perspective of the Sports complex was admittedly beautiful. Unfortunately, the place itself isn't as pretty. Trash were everywhere (If you are planning on doing a clean- up drive, count me in!), the grasses aren't well maintained, and the oval track is still in its natural soil condition.

I was googling on the proper name of the Butuan City Sports Complex and the name of the asphalt like material for the oval track and I happened to see this article of how our Mayor Amante is planning on improving the state of our Sports Complex:

BUTUAN SET TO IMPROVE SPORTS COMPLEX

It's already 2012 while waiting for this project to come true, why don't we do our part by not throwing our litter everywhere and, even better, do a clean up drive oh young sportsmen/ and women of Butuan?

Have a Blessed Sunday

To the people who are still enjoying their Sunday, have a blessed Sunday everyone!

This photo was not taken at a park, park concert, nor a railway station. It was taken at the right side of St. Joseph Cathedral. The first mass of every Sunday afternoon at 4.30 is almost always filled with church-goers. From 4.30- 5.30 the masses are in the local dialect. 6.30- 7.30 masses, in English. Because of the number of the people who hears mass at these times, most of us latecomers stay at the garden outside the church.

People on The Street...

When you wait enough on a given street, you will get a relatively interesting photo. It's good to see more and more people are using helmet while riding their motorcycle. Although the unsafe practice of having more than the allowed number of passengers riding is still prevalent here. It is common to see a whole family riding a small motorcycle or scooter. Father, mother, children (as in more than one kid).

Which reminds me that I think Butuanons are still in the Level 1 pre-conventional- Obedience and Punishment mode (Kohlberg). I see so many (but not as many as before) people riding the motorcycle wearing helmet not on their head but on the crook of their arms, without fastening the straps properly, or even without straps. They use the helmet not to protect themselves but to avoid paying fines (but I'm sure it doesn't only happen here).

This is funny and hypocritical of me, and I should't really say something about this topic, because I have been a passenger of motorcycles and haven't been wearing helmets in most of my rides. But I really will try to have a helmet the next time I ride one again. I have been attempting to buy a helmet but so far the ones I liked doesn't fit on my head. (Excuses...).

Its been awhile since I have been taking photos of people in the streets, it showed while I was taking this photo because after I took a couple of pictures the woman asked me what I was doing, or if I was taking her picture. It must be because of the way I acted suspicious and guilty. Which is weird because most of the time I just fear someone will grab my camera. He he he. Anyway I showed her the pictures I took and explained that I am a crazy person and take pictures of everything. :D

Photo also taken on the same street as yesterday. Jose Rosales Avenue, Butuan City.

Two Trees

I was standing across the street waiting for my friends to arrive when I saw the trees across from me. I bet many Butuanons won't be able to guess where I was. I like the blue skies behind the green and reddish color of the trees.

In the Beginning...

This sight can be seen when you enter the Butuan City Library.

Butuan is called "Historic Butuan" because pre-historic boats called Balangays were found here a testament to how old Butuan really is. The boats were carbon dated at 320 AD, 90 AD, and 1250 AD. (RER-PIA 13 Caraga). It was said that there was no Philippines yet but Butuan was already a thriving community (barangay).

I am not so good with history so if you are interested about these sort of things I googled and found these links:

Another Perspective of Mainit Lake

I posted a photo of Lake Mainit a long time ago. This time I was at Mainit Kasili Lakeside Resort of the municipality of Mainit, Surigao del Norte. When we arrived at the place I immediately went looking for a good view of the lake. Lake Mainit is, according to wikipedia, is the fourth largest lake in the Philippines and the deepest.

I asked one of the construction workers (I think) who was busy pulling at a thick rope what they are building. He replied that they are making a hotel.

Sisig

It is hard getting good photos of a hot, sizzling plate of sisig-most of my previous photos of this subject turned out blurry- because you can't stop yourself from mixing it up in the hot plate before it gets burned, and  you just can't help but forget about taking a photo as the urge to partake of this delectable and tasty dish overcomes you. (Excuses).

Anyway, sisig is one of my favorite foods. One of the places that makes a good sisig for me is at Razon's at Jose Rosales Avenue across DBP. If you haven't tasted this dish yet I am hesitant to say what it is made of because I might put you off. Needless to say it is quite tasty. Sort of crunchy, with a hint of grilled flavor. And it is deliciously sour.

It looks like that its easy to make but apparently according to some recipe variations of this food undergoes a lot of process like boiling, broiling, grilling, and frying. The same with most of Filipino dishes sisig has a lot of styles in preparing it with different ingredient add-ons.

If you haven't had one yet I suggest you order some, taste it, and if you want to know what's it made of go and visit this wikipedia entry of sisig.

Yellow Uniform

This photo was taken while I was riding a tricycle- a common form of transportation within the city area. At the right side are Butuan City's traffic enforcers busily doing their job. It was their bright yellow uniform that first attracted me to them.

Photo taken at Jose Rosales Ave- Jose C. Aquino Avenue. One of the busiest streets in the city.

Street Photo: Pink Multicab

And pink tee-shirt- wearing lady.

I took this photo one afternoon last week. The weather was stifling hot in comparison to Luzon's weather condition which was as wet as can be. Speaking of which, let's pray for the safety (if you are the praying kind) of the people who were/are affected with floods and rains in that region.

Tindok and Nothing But...

This was the photo I promised last time. The tindok in its full form. :)

Tindok

This is not your regular green banana broiled in water- the staple merienda or afternoon  snacks. This is tindok. It is huge. The biggest banana I have ever seen. I'll post another pic tomorrow for another perspective. It tastes like sweet camote and regular green banana. Filling and good!

Sleep My Darling Baby... #2

This photo was taken at the newly opened, but not yet finished, Guingona Park. Judging from the way this woman was sleeping, I bet those new, shiny granite benches are uber comfy. Zzzzz.

Filipina in Red, Blue and Yellow

During a photography workshop ran by Imagine Nation last May (I think) I was able to join them unofficially (Thank you guys!). One of the models was this woman. This particular photo reminds me for some reason of Gabriela Silang, one of my country's heroine. It was said that she is the equivalent of Joan of Arc because she was a Philippine female general who lead the Filipino people against the Spaniards in the 18th century (sci and tech). The colors of blue, red and yellow helped make it more nationalistic in theme.

The background of this picture although you can't see it clearly is the replica of an ancient boat found in Butuan. A balanghai replica now moored at Bading.

The Guingona Park

The park in the middle of the city, formerly known as Rizal Park, or the Plaza is now called as the Guingona Park. It's not yet fully finished. The workers I talked to told me there are still going to put in fountains and stuff around. The statue of the Philippine national Jose Rizal was moved nearer to the church. Tiles are new and that seal on the ground is spanking new also.

I will post another pic if I do get around to taking pics in the near future. Can't wait to see the finished product coz truthfully I am disappointed they chose the kind of brick they put in there. The sidewalk at Asia link and surrounding areas are made of those same kind of brick. Even the colors are the same. Dull. And now they are ugly and broken and ugh. Anyway. I hope they know now what they are doing.
