Hinatuan Pagasa Doppler Radar Station

A photo of Hinatuan Pagasa Doppler Radar Station. It is said to be the only doppler radar station in Mindanao. Since the Philippines is beset with 20 more or less typhoons a year this station will hopefully be able to predict bad weather more accurately.

Side note: Before the doppler station was built it was the location of Hinatuan's postal office.

Another Jollibee

Photobucket
Another Jollibee store is going to open along JC Aquino Ave, Estacio village. This is like those jokes where this building seemed to just sprout up out of nothing overnight hehe at least it seemed to me that it did.

Jollibee is one of the top-- or the top fast food franchise here in the Philippines.

Taken with my ol trusty camera and my mini tripod. Will try to attempt taking pictures at night again soon. :) Btw, only a couple of days to go before christmas :)

If you're wondering at all the people in front of the building- well, they are taking pictures too. Of themselves. Cheers.

Pyramid... Under construction

Photobucket

Saw this scene while passing through the narrow street of the City cemetery last November 1 and 2. I have no idea what it will be, but it sure was big, and obviously pyramid in shape.

Spire

Photobucket

This photo was taken during the same walk-and-shoot my cousin I had one Sunday. This is the spire of a church. A distinctive trademark of their church's architecture. According to wikipedia, the spires are described as either gothic or oriental. I'm tempted to leave this as a guessing game to all Filipino readers that I have-- its that distinctive but I changed my mind.

This is a photo of a spire of Iglesia ni Cristo- The largest indigenous christian organization originating here in the Philippines. I will write some more about Iglesia ni Cristo when I post a more clearer image of their building tomorrow.

City Library

Photobucket

My cousin and I had our walk and photograph bit last Sunday. We walked from our house to city hall taking lots of photos along the way. It was a 2 kilometers walk probably.

We saw a lot of things to take photos of along J. Rosales Ave. One of the things along this thoroughfare is the city library. A relatively new building that was close coz it was Sunday. I think it was a blessing, since we couldn't go inside- locked gate- we had to take pictures through the gate. (The colors were awful hence this overly saturated editing of the photo using photoscape. =)

The city library is supposed to hold documents on local history among other important literature. Those three statues in front of the building symbolizes the American, Japanese and Filipino soldiers during the last world war. (I thought they all look Caucasian but that's just me). A war monument.

If you want to go surf the net for free you can visit the city library too.

Club One

Fitness and health are fast becoming the two of the life priorities of Butuanons (to my friend and my cousin, at least). This was taken at Club One. The gym you can find at the third floor of what is more popularly known to me as the Unitop building. Burgoz corner San Francisco Street.

Alma Mater

Photobucket

San Francisco Street.

Former location of Urios College High School. This is the new FSUU (Father Saturnino Urios Nursing) College of Nursing building(?).

History of FSUU:

In 1901, the Butuan Parochial School was founded by Fr. Saturnino Urios, S.J. and opened its doors to welcome the first pupils. A low building made of bricks adjacent to the old church was built to house the first pupils who trickled in slowly. When the state started asserting its influence and control over public and private schools, the late Fr. Jose Buxo, S.J. was believed responsible for the government recognition of the parochial school. In 1935, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC - Dutch Congregation) took over the missionary work from the Jesuits. In 1939, the high school was opened.

This became Fr. Urios High School, named after Fr. Saturnino Urios, SJ. After the ravages of war, the slow and tedious work of reconstruction began and once again, the school was on its feet.

n 1947, the high school department turned out its first graduates. In the early 1950's the old brick elementary building had to go to make room for the new church, so a wooden grade school building was constructed along San Francisco St. All grade school classes were then transferred to the new building. In 1970, the name of the school was changed from Fr. Urios College to Urios College. At present, the name is now Father Saturnino Urios University-- the first University in Butuan and CARAGA region.

Quoted from from FSUU website with added info by me.

FSUU Hymn

Seat of wisdom of knowledge,
in this southern Timberland,
Fountain you will always be
of the love of man for man.

In your fold the youth awakens,
in the sacred, noble truth,
That for man to find happiness
is to serve his fellowmen.

FATHER URIOS (Urios College), hail to you!
We your children far and near,
Shall your truth forever hold,
Shall your name forever bear.

All Saints' Day and All Soul's Day

Photobucket

Every November 1 and 2, Filipinos return to their hometown for a unique kind of family get together. We spend the days at the local cemetery to visit our deceased family members. To the uninitiated this means that we bring foods, flowers, lots of candles, and sometimes musical instruments to the burial place. I know picnics and cemetery doesn't normally don't go together but in our culture they do.

Yesterday we left for Barangay Libertad cemetery at 3 in the afternoon. We arrived at around 4. Traffic was relatively light compared to last year although the place is as crowded as ever. Kudos to the traffic enforcers for making our trip there stress-free.

Because we spend two days yearly at this place, a number of well-to-do has constructed structures to make their stay at the burial site as comfortable as possible. This is why my uncle called our cemetery as "subdivision of the dead." It is funny because it has truth in them, and sad too because the place looks too overcrowded with all the concrete buildings close together. Anyway, before I rained on anyone's parade you'll see why at the photo below.

Some of these buildings are bare with only benches for sitting, while others have the works: airconditioning, restrooms, appliances etc. In our case, our elders opted for a garden memorial to make it more easy on the eyes (less claustrophobic too).

Our family usually spends the first few minutes (or hours) talking and eating. When it gets darker, we pray. Then we talk some more, take photos, laugh.

We left at around 6, when the sun has set, and the night is more pronounced.

Abandoned

Gray Series #4

The former building of Angelicum Montessori School. Their new location is at Pili Drive.

Oh and happy news!

Remember the photo below? Looks familiar? This was the 'cracks' photo I posted last Monday. In just two days they have patched up the crackwork in the road like magic. I didn't know they have a quick drying concrete that dries in just two days!

Same Old...

Busa Store. This used to be my favorite hunt in my youth (ouch) They sell (used to?) cassette tapes, books, and magazines. Right now they are still the place you go to when you need your daily fix of newspaper. Or nameplates. Or if you want your name printed beautifully on an important document. etc. etc.

(Sigh! brings back memories of eagerly awaiting the latest albums of my favorite musicians or the sequels to my paperback addiction.)
