Sayaw Pera
"Sayaw Pera"
Literally translates as the "money dance." The bride and groom dances while the relatives and friends pin money on their clothes. The newlyweds get to keep the bills after the dance, of course.
Doesn't happen in the weddings here in Manila. What a shame — it's such a cute custom. Now, the bride usually carries a little bag during the reception to put cash gifts in.
beautiful occasion =). oh, that's a nice way to earn some cash. i've heard of this tradition in the ilocos region too. i'm not so sure if it originated from there though.
I tried google, to no avail. I have no idea where or when this practice started. This isn't really an expected part of the wedding but its a fun way to add a 'Filipino' flavor to the gathering. And adds a little cash to the newlywed's coffer at the same time.
this is a great idea. i think it's unfair that newlyweds get the money action though.it would be nice to be able to do the money dance anytime im running a bit low on funds.
This is something that Cajun's do in Louisiana. The story goes that originally people were so poor that they couldn't afford gifts for the bride and groom so they would pin money to the bride's veil. I've seen it done and I think it's a eally fun custom.
